This portrait is 24 inches by 20 inches in Sepia Tone Oil (or earth tones) on Canvas

 

     I created this portrait of my mother from an old photograph taken in 1924 when she was

just 10 years old.  Her glance and demeaner for such a young age reveal my mother's

strength of spirit and resilience even as a child.   Sadly, the photograph and my mother are

gone now, but our family treasures this wonderfully rich oil portrait full of expression.

     My mother was an only child born in 1914.  Her father died when she was a year old and her

mother was hospitalized for a long period of time in her early years.  Because of this, her aunt

raised her until she was 15 years old.   Because her parents were abscent during those

formative years she was quite a feisty child.   As soon as she could pass for 16 years old,

(when she was only 14), she got her first job - in the middle of the Great Depression.  Life

was difficult but she learned to use her determination as a strength.  Later, while raising her

four daughters and one son, she celebrated their (our) birthdays and holidays with much joy

and fanfare and party decorations she created from scratch.  Our Christmases were filled

with her hand-sewn and artistic gifts.  Although she had a difficult life both physically and

emotionally in her later years, she was a great inspiration to me.

      

 

Pamela Preciado is primarily a portrait and figurative fine artist.  She has been painting portraits professionally for the past 40 years.  Schooled in the tradition of the masters, Pamela's goal is to capture the essence of her subjects.
